Bunny Says, "Excuse Me?"

When i prepared the canvas board for "Excuse me?" I was thinking it was small and I would do a funny painting of a rabbit chewing its way out of a cardboard box. So I laid down a basic background color from which to work. When it had dried I went back. I have been wanting to stretch my ability to handle rabbit anatomy, views of bunnies from different angles as well as the body types of different breeds. Coat coloration is something else I want to practice.

I sat in front of the panel and as we often see faces in wood grain, it seemed to me that i could easily imagine a bunny moving away from me but taking a look back as if she'd heard something. So I began to lay out a foreshortened body and as I worked I felt she needed to be intergrated with her background. Her fur picked up the colors of the area around her but a brush stroke here and there and darker shade on one side and lighter on the other rounded her out and lent a gentle lighting to the scene. I know I had what I was searching for, the innate curiousity of bunnies.

This painting pleases me because it captures one of the characteristics of rabbit personality and was also a success for my personal artistic growth.

"Excuse Me?" is painted in acrylics on canvas board. It is 3" x 5" and ready to frame.
