Kelly

My name is Kelly and I am a female, four year old Neatherland Dwarf mix. My human family has four members. Robbie, one of the children wanted a bunny very badly. He talked about it all the time because he knew that Kathleen, his mom, had a bunny before he was born and knew how to take care of us. Deep down, she wanted another bunny and Robbie and his sister Christine talked their parents into bringing me home.

I came from SuperPetz because at that point, my family was not aware of the need for bunny adoptions. Robbie picked me and Kathleen suggested getting a companion for me because two bunnies play with and care for each other. They chose a black lop bunny that was already my friend and named him Lizzie. They thought he was a girl, oops. We were so little and scared but this human family took very good care of us and I have had a very good life. I run through the house and go almost anywhere but I have my favorite places. My humans treat me like the princess that I am and they understand my likes, dislikes and royal inclinations. In return, I am a rare bunny who likes to be picked up and cuddled.

A very bad thing happened to me in December, 2006. My best friend Lizzie got sick and died. It was a very sad time for me and my family. We all missed him very much but my family knew that I needed a bunny companion. They also needed another bunny in the house. Kathleen found Jenni with the Charleston branch of HRS and a bunny named Nibbles that had just been rescued. They had to wait until Nibbles had his boy surgery and I was very surprised and angry when he arrived at our house. I decided to drive him off because this was my house and Lizzie’s house.

Who did he think he was coming into my house and getting petted by my humans? To make matters worse, the humans made us sit near each other and I smelled Nibbles constantly. Once in a while, I would escape and try to bite him or use my claws. At first he ran away, then he tried to bite me back and pulled out some of my beautiful fur! After several weeks, I still couldn’t make him go away and my humans continued to be nice to him. I was furious and let him know everyday when I tried to bite him through the bars of our exercise pens. The few times I actually fought with him, I was surprised at how fast he was. He could jump over me before I bit him and he was bigger. I couldn’t fool him anymore.

After eight weeks, my family was getting very tired of my bad behavior. They had talked to me about this new bunny and forced us both to use each other’s litterboxes, share our space with two exercise pens separating us and they didn’t seem to care that I couldn’t stand Nibbles. One evening, my human Kathleen was working on the computer with her back to us. I quietly grabbed the exercise pen with my teeth and moved it enough to let me through. I was looking at Nibbles face to face. Kathleen made some of those sounds that humans make and the others came running into the room. I slowly hopped over to Nibbles and we decided to touch noses. We didn’t try to bite or hurt each other. I could tell that everyone was very nervous but since he was being nice to me, I decided to groom his ear. He let me come over again to him and the humans were frozen in their places, except for Kathleen who had a towel in her hands. She didn’t need it and although Nibbles and I were just a little scared of each other, we started to get along.

I’m really glad that he is here now. We’re great friends and he has shown me some new places to rest in the house and I have shown him all of my favorite spots. I have a great home and am such a lucky bunny.
