Nibbles
Hi! I’m Nibbles, a lop mix with some long haired bunny somewhere in my background. I’m Kelly’s best buddy now and I have a great life. It was not always that way.
I was probably an Easter bunny since I was born in late January or early February. At the start of the school year the following August, I was dumped into a classroom as a class pet. I guess that the teacher either didn’t like me or was tired of me. She stopped taking care of me and I didn’t get out of this cage that I lived in. The children also poked at me through the cage. I was still little and so unhappy. Another teacher saw what was happening to me and although she couldn’t keep me forever, she took me out of that class to her home. It was better there, at least children didn’t scare me and I had food and water when I needed it. This teacher found Jenni with HRS, who agreed to take me. Jenni almost immediately had a call from Kathleen who wanted to rescue a bunny. Her family had just lost Lizzie, little Kelly was very lonely and they wanted a bunny like me to join their family. Before I could be adopted, I had to go to a place called the vet for something called a neuter.
It hurt for a few days but gradually, I felt better and was allowed to go meet this new bunny, Kelly. She was awful to me. She couldn’t stand me but I thought she was beautiful. I didn’t know that there were other bunnies in the world and I had no memory of my mother or littermates. I wanted to be Kelly’s best friend and I asked her about it everyday. She always said no and tried to bite me. The humans were very good to me and for the first time in my life, I was able to run around and use my big back legs again. My muscles had deteriorated some due to being in a cage all the time. I had lots of good food and hay but Kelly still didn’t like me at all. She would run after me and try to bite my butt. I quickly learned to jump over her and bite her back because I was getting tired of her saying and doing mean things to me. I decided to ignore her and relax on my side of the room and when I knew she couldn’t reach me. One day, we had a fight and I accidentally bit Kathleen. I know that I hurt her and was afraid that she might not adopt me but she forgave me quickly. It was an accident and I was just defending myself.
One evening, Kelly moved the exercise pen and came into my area. I was ready for a fight but she said that she wanted to just touch noses, not fight. We touched noses and a little while later, she asked if she could groom my ear. I was a little scared but I let her and she was very nice.
After that evening, Kelly and I became very good friends. I didn’t know about grooming other bunnies but Kelly taught me. She also taught me my own bunny language and it has been wonderful to live with another great bunny and human family. My family talks about other bunnies like George and Lizzie but I know that they love us all and know that we have our own personalities. They call Kelly a princess and call me a surfer-dude. I like to do what I want and I have come to love and trust this family. They take good care of me, especially my teeth. I seem to have teeth that are prone to overgrowth and those teeth cut my tongue once. I couldn’t eat and my mouth bled. Kathleen takes me back to the vet to check them so that it never happens again. I’m a very lucky bunny.
Nibbles was adopted from the Lowcountry House Rabbit Society (a branch of N Ga HRS) in January 2007. We are so thankful that he has such a wonderful home now!
