HIPPITY HOPPITY ABBY’S ON HER WAY

Abby was the third bunny to join the Miller household, and the first to leave us. She is sadly missed, but fondly remembered and no account of our rabbit history would be complete without her.

Abby was a small albino bunny with Rex fur. She lived with two previous owners before coming to us. The first owners were responsible enough to have her spayed, but they also did the unthinkable. They had her front teeth removed, the reason being *!so she wouldn’t bite anyone!*. I could write a book on the cruelty of removing a bunny’s front teeth, and I often apologized to Abby for her former owners’ indiscretions. The second owner was a little girl whose mom had asthma. Abby lived outside in a really nice hutch, but a very noisy neighborhood. Her diet was alfalfa pellets, very little hay, and unhealthy (pet store) treats. Sometimes the family would go away for a week or more, leaving Abby with a large bowl of pellets and two water bottles. I wonder if some of this contributed to her poor health later.

Abby Rabbit Memorial from the Charleston, SC areaOnce home and in the house, Abby was very shy about coming out of the cage. She was always very timid and docile—our one bunny that tolerated being held and snuggled. But over time, with a good diet and lots of TLC Abby’s personality began to blossom. In spite of her missing front teeth, she could put away Timothy hay with the best of them. She had such an appetite that she earned the nickname “Piglet”. Whenever I came in to feed salads or treats, she hummed until she got hers, or stamped her feet if I wasn’t quick enough.

Abby’s favorite toy was a cardboard tunnel, and she loved “burrowing” under her special pink blankie. She was approximately 4 years old when she came to us, about 7 when she died on December 6, 2007. She suffered kidney disease, fought the good fight, and died peacefully at home in my arms. Rest in peace Little Abby. We still love you!
