Biscuit & Roxie's Love Story
Mt. Kisco, NY
In March of 2005 I was introduced to the wonderful world of rabbits when we purchased two girls from a local pet store. They were the best of friends until one day Biscuit started a fight with Cappy. Imagine our surprise to find that we had two boys! We quickly separated them and turned our attention to Cappy who developed a head tilt. As new bunny parents we struggled to care for him and sadly after a second episode of stasis, he died.
Luckily we still had Biscuit, a beautiful black and white Dutch boy with loads of personality. We were nervous about getting him neutered, but we took the plunge in November and after a month started the search for a bunny for him. This time we contacted local rescues and set up Biscuit for a series of speed dates with some beautiful bunnies. We lucked out when he picked Roxie. She is a gorgeous black bunny with a white nose and white paws and it was love at first sight….well almost.
She came home and quickly settled in to her pen next to his. We methodically went about the bonding process and they never had a fight. In the beginning he demanded and got all the grooming and I’m happy to say that after about two weeks, Roxie’s feminist side kicked in. She stuck her head under his and wouldn’t give up until he groomed her! Of course by now he was in LOVE big time. We’d let them both out to play in their own space and he would sit by her pen and gaze lovingly at her while she ran around. One time he actually jumped from the stairs into her space. Were we surprised! No one was hurt.
It only took them about five weeks to become the best of friends and we opened the gates and they’ve been together ever since. We just keep learning more about these wonderful creatures and are constantly amazed at their intelligence and personality. Who says a rabbit can’t communicate. There is nothing like the flick of the back legs to tell me I’ve displeased them! And while they are perfectly litter box trained, a puddle of pee says “I didn’t like you cleaning my room yesterday!” And just like any couple they occasionally have a tiff – guess he doesn’t like her grabbing that piece of kale out of his mouth. And like any couple they make up quickly.
In June 2007 we moved to a larger house and they now live in our eat-in kitchen and are a part of the household. It took them some time to get used to the new place, but after about a week and adding some carpet runners to the wood floors, they ventured out. Now there is no stopping them as they sample their favorite furniture legs and find some new treats along the way. I’ve learned that rabbit proofing is a constantly evolving process as they continue to outwit me! They continue to be love bunnies and I love the evening snuggle as they are cuddled together waiting for that good night pet from me.
